TotalEnergies launches solar park to power Oman desalination plant

French energy group TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) has launched a 17-MWp solar park in Oman which will power a water desalination plant in the northeast of the Sultanate.
The solar farm was inaugurated on Monday in the presence of Oman’s energy minister Salim Al Aufi, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals said.
The solar park is located on the site of the Sharqiyah Desalination plant in the coastal city of Sur. It is expected to generate 32,000 MWh annually which is enough to cover 100% of the water desalination plant’s power needs during daylight hours.
The desalination plant has a capacity to process almost 132,000 cubic metres of water per day serving some 600,000 people in the Sharqiyah region of Oman and helping fight the depletion of the region’s scarce groundwater resources.
The project, TotalEnergies’ first renewable energy initiative in the country, was developed in cooperation with French company Veolia. It aligns with Oman’s National Energy Strategy, which aims to transition 30% of its electricity consumption to renewable sources by 2030.
