Hydrom, the government entity driving Oman’s green hydrogen ambitions, has surpassed its initial target of 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green hydrogen production. This achievement follows the signing of two new multi-billion dollar projects in Dhofar.
Surpassing Targets:
- Hydrom awarded contracts for two green hydrogen projects in Dhofar, valued at a combined $11 billion.
- These projects, along with the six awarded in 2023, bring Oman’s projected green hydrogen production to a staggering 1.38 mtpa by 2030.
Strategic Advantage:
- Oman’s strategic location between key green hydrogen demand centers in Europe and Asia, coupled with its strong infrastructure, allows it to capitalize on this emerging market.
- H.E. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted Oman’s “first mover advantage” in the global hydrogen industry.
Project Details:
- The first project, led by a consortium including EDF Group, J-POWER, and Yamna, aims to produce 178,000 tpa of green hydrogen by 2030 using renewable energy sources.
- The produced hydrogen will be converted into 1 million tonnes of green ammonia at a planned ammonia plant in the Salalah Free Zone.
- The second project, a collaboration between Actis and Fortescue, involves developing up to 4.5 GW of wind and solar power to produce up to 200,000 tpa of green hydrogen.
- This hydrogen will be used domestically and potentially exported as green ammonia through the Port of Salalah.
Rapid Advancement:
- Hydrom’s Managing Director, Abdulaziz Said Al Shidhani, emphasized the impressive pace of Oman’s green hydrogen development, transitioning from land identification to international agreements within two years.
Looking Ahead:
These project signings solidify Oman’s position as a leader in the green hydrogen revolution. With its ambitious goals and strategic partnerships, Oman is well-positioned to become a major exporter of clean energy solutions.
