Oman’s Green Hydrogen Odyssey: A Nation in Transition

The Sultanate of Oman is embarking on an ambitious journey to transform its energy landscape. Central to this transformation is the development of a robust green hydrogen industry. Hydrom, the state-owned entity tasked with steering this initiative, recently convened a pivotal workshop in Muscat to assess the nation’s preparedness for achieving its ambitious green hydrogen production targets by 2030.
Chaired by Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of Hydrom, Salem Nasser Al-Awfi, the workshop brought together key stakeholders to chart a course for Oman’s green hydrogen future. The event underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to this sector as a cornerstone of the nation’s economic diversification and environmental sustainability goals.
A Strategic Land Grab
Hydrom has made significant strides in securing the necessary infrastructure for green hydrogen production. The entity has allocated over 2,300 square kilometers of land across eight plots, representing a substantial portion of the 50,000 square kilometers earmarked for this purpose. This strategic land acquisition has attracted a wave of international interest, with investment commitments surpassing $49 billion from energy consortia spanning Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
Building the Hydrogen Value Chain
Hydrom is not merely focused on production; it aims to develop a comprehensive hydrogen value chain. The company is committed to stimulating job creation, economic growth, and institutional capacity building across Oman. Since its establishment in October 2022, Hydrom has demonstrated rapid progress in advancing its operations and establishing itself as a key player in the global hydrogen market.
A Milestone Achievement
Underscoring Oman’s commitment to its green hydrogen ambitions, Hydrom secured two new projects in Dhofar valued at $11 billion in April 2023. This achievement marks a significant step forward in realizing the nation’s green hydrogen vision and solidifies Oman’s position as a global leader in this emerging industry.

While Oman possesses abundant solar and wind resources, essential components for green hydrogen production, the nation faces several challenges. These include developing the necessary infrastructure, building a skilled workforce, and attracting long-term investments.
